Clinical Features :
Most common : urethritis (men); cervicitis, salpingitis, PID (females), Ophthalmia neonatorum; Proctitis (homosexuals), Watercan perineum
Virulence Factors :
Pili outer membrane protein, Proteins Opa, Por, Rmp; Lipooligosaccharides; IgA1 protease
Culture & Gram Reaction :
Specimen – Discharge or urethral swab, endocervical swab
Transport media – Stuart’s media
Culture in chocolate agar, Muller-Hinton agar, modified Thayer-Martin media at 35-36C under 5-10% CO2.
Small colonie, round translucent convex or umbonate, fine granular surface.
Plenty PMNL with intracellular Gram negative diplococci with adjacent side concave or kidney shaped. This is confirmatory in males, additional NAAT reqd for females.

Ferments glucose but not maltose, sucrose, lactose

Ceftriaxone
